Bold and the beautiful
BY IJMAL HAIDER
With all the styles out there these days, lately, I am drawn to a European Modernist aesthetic. It’s something I am drawing a lot of inspiration from, it’s smart, sophisticated, architectural, and blurs the lines between modern and vintage. Often as I study different styles I go through a rabbit hole of books and internet searches just inspired. I study silhouettes, designers, and staple furniture pieces from a particular style or era and then learn how they were made. Athena Calderone has been a big inspiration for me lately, I admire her ability to incorporate furniture with soft lines with accents with hard textures.
This is a photo from her Brooklyn Townhouse, featured in Vogue Australia, her Camaleonda sofa (By Mario Bellini) adds a softness with sculptural lines and the juxtaposition between that and the triangular two piece marble coffee tables, by Apparatus, creates this interesting pairing using geometry, soft textures, and natural elements.
I can sit and stare at this room and just admire the subtle details and I will pick up or notice something new everytime I study this image. To me that is a good mark of design, to be able to draw interest through the art of subtlety. She was able to tell a story in the space that was so much more articulate than if she just wrote about it, the details need to be seen and felt to be truly understood. This room was a great deal of inspiration for me, and I am excited to share it with all of you.
